Microsoft is reportedly removing the Xbox Live Gold paywall for streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. It could happen as soon as E3 this June.
Update: Microsoft has confirmed the news, saying; "This includes great gaming apps like Machinima, Twitch and Upload, popular video services like Netflix, Univision Deportes, GoPro, Red Bull TV and HBO GO, sports experiences like the NFL app for Xbox One, MLB.TV, NBA Game Time, NHL Game Center and more."
Xbox Gold is changing
Microsoft could soon change the requirement for Xbox Live Gold subscription to access streaming services such as Netflix, Hulu and other apps. On the other hand, Microsoft is planning to move other - unspecified - services behind the paywall, possibly Microsoft’s future TV series.
The announcement might come as early as next month, according to multiple sources who have spoken with Ars Technica. Nothing is official at this point, but the move could also pave the way for a pure TV media streamer Xbox, which has been rumored for some time.
Sony and Nintendo are not charged users a monthly fee to access streaming apps.
In the meantime, most of the world is still waiting for Microsoft to launch the Xbox One this September.
