YouTube to acquire live game service Twitch for $1b

YouTube wants to grow even bigger by acquiring Twitch; a live game streaming service. YouTube is prepared to pay $1 billion to take over Twitch, which is actually not far from the amount Google paid to buy YouTube back in 2006.

YouTube is expanding

It is remarkable how far YouTube has come in less than a decade. The quality of both content and picture has improved tremendously, and in the transition to 4K resolution and TV content via the internet Google-owned YouTube sees the opportunity to take the next step.

But YouTube is also looking outside for growth. According to Variety, Google is buying Twitch, which is live game streaming service that lets gamers broadcast their gameplay to an audience. A sort of streaming service for computer games, just like sports are broadcast on TV today.

Twitch was also recently integrated into PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Twitch has over 45 million users per month and is responsible for no less than 1.35% of all download traffic on the Internet in the US.

The most remarkable detail is probably the amount Google is willing to pay. They are said to cough up $1 billion dollars, which is actually not far from the $1.65 billion Google paid to acquire YouTube back in 2016.

YouTube is looking to continue their impressive growth and with a gaming element they hope to add another leg to the chair.
