Samsung has bigger plans for Smart TVs. Ahead of its developer conference today Samsung has revealed that a new ambitious Smart TV platform is in the works, based on the Tizen OS.
A new generation of Smart TVs
If you own a 2013 or 2014 Smart TV from Samsung you know that the Smart TV platform is okay, but not great. Following LG’s release of webOS-based Smart TVs, Samsung wants to build Smart TVs based on the Tizen OS, which is designed to work on smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, and well, TVs.

Samsung also hopes to steal Apple’s thunder from today’s WWDC 2014 keynote by hosting its own Tizen Developer Conference in San Francisco from June 2-4th. Ahead of the conference, Samsung announces that developers will get a first look at the Tizen Smart TV platform and how to develop apps for it.
Intel is a partner in Tizen and based on Samsung and LG’s plans to develop in-house Smart TV platforms it appears that they are not part of Google’s new Android TV platform that is expected to be unveiled later this month.
Samsung has not announced any actual Tizen Smart TVs and refuses to say when they will be released, but rumors have been floating since last year. The development kit for the Tizen TV platform will be released in beta this July. Samsung has just released new non-Tizen Smart TVs, so we think it is safe to assume that this is 2015 stuff.
Samsung usually releases its new TV line-up in April/May.
