During peak hours, Netflix gobbles up a third of Internet traffic in the US. Add all the other video services on top and video accounts for a majority of internet traffic. That trend will only get more significant as video is expected to account for 79% of all internet traffic by 2018, Cisco says.
And the internet will more than double
The numbers come from Cisco’s annual internet report. Video already represented 66% of global internet traffic in 2013, but that number is expected to climb to 79% by 2018 as more TV services will move video distribution to the internet.
Internet traffic in general is expected to more than double over the next five years. By 2018 nearly four billion people will have access to the internet, up from 2.5 billion in 2013.
HD and 4K video is expected to be a major driver in more video traffic. Especially 4K video requires a lot of bandwidth, and Cisco expects 20% of TVs to feature 4K resolution by 2018. The average internet speed is also expected rise 2.6 times to be 42 Mbps by 2018, more than enough for pristine 4K streaming quality.
