Sharp can now make LCD displays in any shape you want; circular; triangular or a combination of shapes. Sharp calls it a “revolutionary advance over the conventional display shapes”.
For greater design freedom
Sharp calls it the free-from display and it enables the creation of entirely new display designs for new products, Sharp believes. They are no longer constrained by the rectangular shape.

Sharp explains that displays are typically rectangular because the drive circuit - the gate driver – is located in the bezel. With the free-from display and IGZO technology, Sharp moves the gate driver into the actual pixels, enabling them to almost exclude the bezel and create all kinds of shapes.
Sharp has demonstrated a prototype car dashboard display, but imagines that their displays can also be used in wearable devices, monitors or digital advertisement displays outside.
Sharp plans to enter mass production at the ”earliest possible date”.
