Today, Philips unveiled the new 9 series TV. It is a high-end Ultra HD TV with Philips’ characteristic Ambilight system and a Smart TV platform based on Google’s Android.
Philips 9809 unveiled
Philips unveiled its new 2014 line-up earlier this year, but as per tradition the new high-end 9 series launches later in the year. Here it is as the 9809 series that will only be available as in a 65-inch size.

It is an Ultra HD TV with a HDMI 2.0 port for connecting external 4K players. However, there is no mention of HEVC decoding – just like other 4K TVs from Philips – which means that it cannot playback Netflix 4K or other streaming services that offer 4K content.
Philips highlights other picture systems such as the Perfect Pixel Ultra HD engine and Micro Dimming Premium.
The TV will offer access to Android apps via a Smart TV platform based on Android. This is not the official Android TV version by Google that will only be available in 2015 TVs, but instead Philips’ own implementation. It offers access to the Google Play Store and games.
Philips has not confirmed if it will be possible to update to official Android TV platform next year.

Philips 9809 also integrates a 4-sided Ambilight system that can communicate with the Philips Hue. Other features include a twin-tuner for recording, powerful 30W speakers and a 50W wireless subwoofer, and active 3D technology.
The 65-inch Philips 65PUS9809 will be available during the third quarter of 2014. Full specifications here.
