LG's flexible OLED will change displays forever

10 Jul 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Imagine a paper-thin display that you can fold or roll up and bring with you. This will soon be possible with flexible OLED displays, and LG has just unveiled the world’s largest at 18”. LG is still on track to develop a 60” version by 2017.

The world’s largest of its kind

LG.Display has demonstrated a working prototype of a 18” flexible OLED as well as a 18” transparent OLED display. These are the largest of its kind to date and are part of a major development effort by LG, backed by the Korean government.

On the technical side, LG says that the flexible display has a resolution of 1200x810 pixels and a curvature radius of 30R. It can be rolled up to a radius of 3cm. The transparent OLED panel has a transmittance is 30 %, meaning that some light can pass through, but that most is still blocked.

LG says that the current prototype demonstrates that they can bring rollable OLED TVs larger than 50 inches to the market in the near future, and repeats that they are on track to develop a 60-inch OLED panel by 2017, which will be even more flexible than today.

The future looks bright – and flexible.
