Sony has sold 10m PS4 - game sharing announced

13 Aug 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

The PlayStation 4 has been the most successful game console launch in history. Sony has reached the 10 million milestone and says that a new Share Play feature is coming. PlayStation Now and PlayStation TV are coming to Europe.

10 million PS4 consoles

More than 10 million PS4 consoles are in consumers’ hands. Sony revealed the milestone at its Gamescom event yesterday. It has been a while since Microsoft gave an update on Xbox One, but industry observers expect the sales number to be much lower. Microsoft announced 5 million sold in mid-April.

Sony will soon release a 2.0 software update for PlayStation 4 with a new Share Play feature that lets you invite friends to play a game with you over the internet - even if they do not own the game.

Sony confirmed that its PlayStation Now service is coming to Europe. PS Now is a streaming service that lets you play PS2 and PS3 games on your TV or other devices without the actual game console. PS Now will be available in beta in the UK sometime in 2015.

Sony also announced that the PlayStation TV box will launch in the US on October 13 and in Europe on November 14 for $99/€99. PlayStation TV has apps such as Netflix and in addition it lets you play PS4 games in for example your bedroom when your main PS4 console is placed in the living room.

Lastly, Sony announced a range of new games. You can watch the trailers on Sony’s PlayStation YouTube page.
