LG's OLED TV wins 2014 TV shootout

20 Aug 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Each year enthusiasts and calibrators meet for the annual Value Electronics flat panel shootout, but this year's results were noteworthy. LG’s OLED TV won the 2014 King of TV, and Samsung’s OLED TV was the calibrator’s pick.

Update: Robert Zohn has sent out an announcement regarding the results; "LG’s 55EC9300 OLED won the majority of voting categories and the most important categories, but if you average all the attributes together, Samsung’s F8500 plasma has the highest score overall". Robert concludes; “So for the first time ever we are announcing a tie in popular vote between LG’s EC9300 OLED and Samsung’s F8500 plasma, with Samsung’s KN55S9C OLED as the expert calibrator’s top pick”.

OLED is the new king

We have already awarded LG’s OLED TV our Reference Award and EISA recently awarded LG’s 4K OLED TV the best high-end TV. If you are still not convinced, US calibrators and enthusiasts have just awarded LG’s OLED TV “2014 King of TV”.

More specifically, it was the brand-new 55EC9300 model. It scored between 8-10 in all categories, except for color accuracy and motion resolution. The calibrators pick was Samsung’s OLED TV, which uses a different OLED pixel structure.

2014 flat panel shootout

Panasonic is out of the plasma market, so only Samsung’s F8500 plasma TV was included. It scored higher than the four Ultra HD TVs from Sony and Samsung. One of them was Samsung’s 105-inch high-end LCD TV. Panasonic has been a top-performer in the shootout in the past, but this year no Panasonic TV made it into the panel.

FlatpanelsHD has been invited to participate in the shootout for the last few years, but unfortunately it is a very long trip from where we reside.

Plasma is no longer the king. Long live OLED. LG will launch its 4K OLED TVs in October.
