Panasonic launches new AX900 & X940 4K TVs

At IFA 2014, Panasonic is launching two new high-end Ultra HD TVs. The AX900 has been expected since spring and is now finally available. Panasonic is also releasing a very high-end 85-inch X940 TV.

Two new high-end 4K TVs

Panasonic is expanding its line-up of 4K TVs with two new models. AX900 is the bigger brother to the current AX800 and the main difference is a LED local dimming system that promises to bring the “deepest blacks”.

In addition, Panasonic says that they have worked with its Hollywood studio to ensure very accurate color reproduction. The TV is utilizing a so-called 3D look-up table to improve color reproduction, which is usually only found in professional studio monitors, says Panasonic. It has also been 4K THX certified for its picture quality.

Panasonic says that AX900 offers a full Smart TV platform with HEVC and a quad-core processor, but there is no mention of 4K content partnerships (update: Panasonic has confirmed 4K streaming from Netflix and Amazon). Panasonic previously said that AX900 will be their first 4K TV to support Netflix 4K streaming, but this is not confirmed in the press release. It also has four HDMI 2.0 and a DisplayPort input, which allows you to connect a range of 4K players.

Other features include TV Anywhere that lets you stream your TV channels on the TV to a mobile device outside the home. “My Stream” is a recommendation engine that recommends new movies and YouTube content based on what you have seen in the past.

AX900 will be available in October/November in 55 and 65-inch sizes.

The X940 is a premium TV that will be available in only a 85-inch size. It has almost every feature of the AX900, but utilizes a slightly less powerful picture system and comes without the LED local dimming system of the AX900. It also has a different design.
