4K Blu-ray players will be ready by Christmas 2015

05 Sep 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

According to the Blu-ray Disc Association a new 4K Blu-ray specification is expected to be finalized by summer 2015. 4K Blu-ray players and movies should be available to buy in time or Christmas 2015.

4K Blu-ray is coming in 2015

In January, BDA told us to expect a 4K Blu-ray standard by the end of 2014. Well, you have to wait another year until the end of 2015. By then you should be able to buy the players and movies.

- ”We haven't maybe been as proactive as some of the other services have been about announced 4K,” said Victor Matsude, chairman of the Blu-ray Disc Association to TechRadar.

The 4K Blu-ray specification is expected to be finalized by Q3 2015. At the moment, no technical details have been confirmed, except for the 4K resolution of course. A new Blu-ray format is also expected to include support for wider color gamuts and deeper color bits, as well as HFR (high-frame rate) content such as The Hobbit. Most likely also better audio.

Netflix is currently on of the few services streaming in 4K, but it will be joined by Amazon Prime later this year.
