Amazon's 4K streaming service coming in October

11 Sep 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

At IFA, Amazon confirmed that it is partnering with a range of Smart TV makers for the launch of its 4K streaming service. Amazon will offer TV series and movies in 4K starting from October.

Amazon to challenge Netflix

Starting next month, Netflix will not be the only major player to offer 4K streaming. Amazon is joining and is already shooting most of its original TV series in 4K resolution.

Amazon vs. Netflix 4K

We had a chance to see Amazon Prime in glorious 4K during IFA, and compare it side-by-side with Netflix’s House of Cards. It certainly looked great, but our initial impression was that Netflix’s 4K stream looked slightly better, more detailed. Still, it is close to impossible to draw any conclusions based on a short demo at a trade show.

We were able to confirm that Samsung, Panasonic, Sony and LG are working on bringing Amazon’s 4K content into the living room with a Smart TV app that will be released/updated in the near future. Amazon’s 4K service will launch “globally” in October, but it is unclear which markets Amazon is hinting at and if it will launch on all TV brands at the same time.
