Apple has launched a new iMac with an amazing 27-inch Retina display that has the “world’s highest-resolution”, coming in at 5120x2880 pixels. That is 67 percent more than a 4K screen.

We have been waiting for a Retina iMac from Apple for quite some time. Now it is here, and it is even more impressive than many had expected. On the new “5K” display you can play or edit 4K video and still have extra room for tools or menus.
The 27-inch display has 5120x2880 pixels, which is 4 times more than the previous iMac. This means that it can run 2X scaling like you know from an iPad or iPhone to give you super-crisp images without making everything look tiny on-screen. Picture quality should be no less than amazing. Apple says that “text looks as sharp as it does on a printed page”.
There is no word on the panel type used, but we assume that it is IPS (update: IPS confirmed). Apple says that it is 30 percent more power efficient, despite the 4x pixel count. It should also have better contrast and comes factory-calibrated to ensure accurate colors. And the iMac is still as thin as before.
Along with the new Macs, Apple is also introducing OS X Yosemite, and apps like Final Cut Pro X have been updated to take advantage of the high resolution.
The new iMac with Retina display is mainly targeted at professional users, but even regular Mac owners can join the fun with a $2499 starting price. This price also includes a 3,5 GHz i5, AMD R9 M290X graphics card and a 1TB Fusion Drive.
