Philips launches 27" gaming monitor with G-Sync

20 Oct 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

120 / 144 Hz is the norm by now, but G-Sync is one of the new initiatives in gaming monitors. The technology makes sure that the monitor synchronizes with the frame rate of the graphics card. Philips’s new 27-inch 272G5DYEB is its first G-sync monitor.

Philips wants a bigger role in gaming monitors, and its latest model combines 144 Hz, Nvidia G-Sync and 1 ms response time. Resolution, on the other hand, is only 1920x1080 pixels.

144 Hz - or 144 pictures per second – is not new and pretty self-explanatory. More pictures per second ensure a smoother viewing experience, which is important in competitive games. G-sync is a relatively new technology that synchronizes the frame rate of the monitor perfectly to the frame rate of the PC graphics card. This can reduce latency and eliminate tearing.

To use G-sync you also need one of the latest Nvidia graphics cards with DisplayPort. HDMI and DVI ports are not supported. Philips’ monitor uses a TN panel, which often offers speed at the expense of picture quality. It also has a built-in USB hub and ergonomic adjustment options, including height adjustment.

Philips 272G5DYEB will be available later in October for around 500 UK pounds.
