Apple products are usually considered premium-priced, but LG’s first 4K Cinema monitor is almost as costly as the $2499 5K Retina iMac. However, the 31MU97 has some advantages over the 5K Retina iMac such as full coverage of AdobeRGB.
Update: The price has already been reduced significantly from he suggested retail price that LG communicated at first. It is now available for around 1400 USD in the US.
But has AdobeRGB & 10-bit
LG teased the 31-inch 31MU97 back in August, and here it is. The monitor offers cinema 4K, meaning 4096x2160 pixels, and is aimed at video professionals and photographers.
LG’s monitor has significantly fewer pixels with a total of 8,847,360 compared to 14,745,600 for the 5K iMac, but on the other hand it can reproduce 99.5% of the much wider AdobeRGB color gamut as well as 97% of the DCI-P3 color gamut used by digital cinema projectors, making it a better tool for video production. It also operates with a 10-bit and 60 Hz IPS panel. LG says that it incorporates a Thunderbolt port and that it is also Mac compatible.

It also features a basic, black plastic frame and a stand that offers several ergonomic adjustment options.
The LG 31MU97 will be available starting this week in the US, South Korea, Germany, Australia and the UK followed by the Netherlands, Spain, Poland and Japan in November. It is currently listed at $2499 AUD, which converts to around $2200 USD.
