Google’s movie and TV store is now available as an app on the Roku streaming boxes. From here you can buy or rent movies and TV shows.
A Google app on Roku
This was a little unexpected since Google has plans to launch its Android TV platform soon, but Roku has become a popular choice for streamers in the US and parts of Europe, so why not?
Roku owners in the US, UK, Ireland and Canada can now find the Google Play Movies and TV app among all the other apps. Through the app you can buy and rent movies and TV shows in HD quality. Unlike the app on iOS, you can actually browse the store for all titles on Roku.

The app also includes “info cards” on actors that you can bring up by pressing the pause button at any given scene. Google is offering the first X-Men movie form 2003 for free to users who sign up or download the app on Roku.
Roku is currently the second-largest TV platform after Apple TV, and is currently planning to expand into Smart TV. TCL and Hisense started rolling out the first Roku-based Smart TVs earlier this year.
