Xbox One will "shortly" hit 10m sales after price cut

13 Nov 2014 | Rasmus Larsen |

Microsoft has announced that it will “shortly” hit the 10 million milestone with Xbox One. Sales have tripled after the $50 price cut earlier this month, and Xbox One is now outselling PS4 in the US for the first time.

10 million Xbox One consoles

Microsoft and Sony both got off to a good start with the new game consoles, but Sony has outsold Microsoft on its home turf in the US every months since launch. But over the past two weeks, Xbox One has outsold PS4 in the US, claims Microsoft.

Earlier this year, Microsoft slashed the price by $100 after making Kinect optional. In early November, Microsoft cut the price further by $50 and that cut will remain until the end of the year. New games have also been released in the last few weeks as we are entering the Holiday season. Microsoft’s Yusuf Mehdi says that “sales have skyrocketed since the new price took effect”, and adds that “shortly, we will have sold in to retailers more than 10 million Xbox One consoles”.

For comparison, Sony announced 13.5 million PS4s last month. There is one big difference in reporting, though, as Sony’s number is sold-to-customers, whereas Microsoft’s is shipments-to-retailers, so there could still be some distance between the two consoles. Nevertheless, Microsoft has reasons to celebrate.

November 2014 marks one year of sales for both consoles.
