Samsung announced its first virtual reality product at IFA in September, and has now put a shipping date on the product. Gear VR will start shipping in early December for $199, but you also need the Galaxy Note 4.
Gear VR will cost $199
Samsung Gear VR has been co-developed with Oculus and will sell for $199. The price seems a bit steep as it is basically just a mount for the Galaxy Note 4 that is required to enjoy the VR experience.
Samsung says that once you mount the Galaxy Note 4 inside it will automatically install the software, including a VR movie theatre app and a 360-degree panoramic photo and video viewer. Samsung will sell a bundle with a Bluetooth gamepad for $249.
Samsung also announced Project Beyond, a 360-degree camera used for creating live streaming experiences. It includes 16 cameras that can capture the world in 3D. “We are planning to take it all around the world,” said Pranav Mistry, Samsung’s VP of Research.
Samsung stressed that the Gear VR is still for developers, but everyone can buy one if they like, and adds that Gear VR is “really just the beginning”.
