Vimeo is regarded as a YouTube competitor and is preferred by many professional video people. Vimeo has now started offering videos in stunning 4K resolution – but only as downloads initially.
4K streaming coming later
If you have never visited Vimeo you should do it right now and take a look at some of the amazing video productions inside by amateurs and professionals. From now on, you will be able to experience videos in incredible detail.
It has been possible to upload videos in 4K for some time, but people watching videos have not been able to experience them in 4K. That changed yesterday as Vimeo now lets Pro members and on-demand sellers offer 4K resolution to viewers - something that will surely please the crowd of RED camera owners.

It is only possible to download content in 4K for now, but the option to stream in 4K will be added later. Vimeo explains that it is still early days for 4K and that some pieces still need to fall into place. They are probably also waiting for new compressions formats such as HEVC to become more widespread.
- ”And while we don’t yet offer 4K streaming on our site, we’ll be ready by the time broadband providers start widely supporting the high speeds required. It'll be so awesome when we all have IMAX TVs in our homes...”
Vimeo believes that the new Apple 5K iMac will be a turning point for 4K.
