Amazon promised to start streaming in 4K this year and has now made good on that promise, joining Netflix in the roll-out of the next step in TV. However, the catalogue is still quite small.
Amazon now streaming in 4K
If you are an Amazon Instant Video subscriber in the US and you own an Ultra HD TV you can now stream entertainment in brilliant 4K resolution. Unlike Netflix, Amazon charges no extra fee for 4K streaming for subscribers.
The catalogue is still quite small, ranging from a few Amazon Studio originals such as Transparent, Alpha House, Life on Normal Street, future Amazon originals, and BBC’s Orphan Black to movies from Sony, including Crouching Tiger – Hidden Dragon, Funny Girl, and Philadelphia.

You can also buy 4K movies for $19.99 such as After Earth, American Hustle, Captain Phillips, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Elysium, Godzilla, Hancock, Moneyball, The Mask of Zorro, The Monuments Men, The Amazing Spider-Man, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Da Vinci Code, The Patriot, Think Like a Man Too, This Is the End.
Amazon is using the HEVC codec; a next-generation codec format designed specifically for 4K Ultra HD. Amazon 4K is supported on Ultra HD TVs with HEVC decoding from LG, Samsung, and Sony. More will be added next year.
