Do you remember Google Glass? The nerdy glasses that project images and information onto your eye. Sony is following in Google’s footsteps with its new "SmartEyeglass Attach", which has been designed for people who are already wearing glasses.
A Google Glass-like product
Google Glass was no success despite all the fuss around the product in the beginning. Outsiders felt monitored by wearers and most people just looked plain ridiculous wearing it.
Sony still believes that the idea has potential so the company has developed a similar product, targeting athletes and business use. The product is designed to be attached to an existing frame on everyday glasses or sports goggles. Sony believes that the technology "possesses the potential to enrich users' lives in a variety of ways."
Sony is using a small OLED display module with a resolution of 640x400 pixels that is projected onto the eye by using a small lens. It has built-in bluetooth, WiFi, battery, accelerometer, compass, and an ARM processor like the one in your phone. It weighs 40 grams in total.
The product will be unveiled at CES 2015 in Las Vegas next month together with the software tools for developing apps.
