You might have noticed that one of the usual suspects at CES announced no new TVs at the 2015 show. Japanese Toshiba is “re-assessing” its future plans for TVs in the US market, according to a statement provided to Twice.
No new TVs from Toshiba
The TV business is hard, especially for the Japanese players. CES has been the place to get a first glance at Toshiba’s new TVs for decades, but not in 2015. Toshiba is considering its future for TVs in the US market. The company will continue selling TVs in Europe and Asia.
- “Toshiba Corporation is currently evaluating the business model for the U.S. consumer TV market as part of the company’s measures to reform its Visual Products business worldwide,” the company said in a statement in Twice. “Toshiba will announce the details when the decision has been finalized in the next few months.”
Not a single new Toshiba TV was on display at CES, and it is currently unclear if 2014 models will continue to be available. If Toshiba decides to pull the plug it just reinforce the trend of Japanese TV manufacturers falling prey to the South Korean and in recent years Chinese players.
Toshiba played a big role in the HD DVD vs. Blu-ray format war, where its HD DVD format eventually lost to Blu-ray, as well as in Canon’s promising SED TV technology that never made it to the market.
