Microsoft's HoloLens can make holograms around you

22 Jan 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

At Microsoft’ Windows 10 event, the company unveiled a technology that it has been working on for years. The HoloLens is a headset that can put “holograms” in the world around you. Microsoft calls it the future of computing.

Windows Holographic

This is the kind of technology that people have dreamed about for years and Microsoft is taking the first steps towards making it reality. When worn, the HoloLens glasses can put objects or video in right in front of you.

Microsoft demonstrated HoloLens in several different scenarios from games to everyday solutions. It demonstrated how you can play Minecraft on your living room table and how you can augment computer objects in the real world. It even took the viewer to Mars to explore the Martian surface. It is possible to interact with objects by using finger gestures.

Microsoft HoloLens

The HoloLens headset is part of what Microsoft calls Windows Holographic, a new initiative to literally bring Windows into the world around you. The headset is a full computer with a CPU, GPU and sensor, so no wires are required.

HoloLens is not exactly virtual reality. It is not like the Oculus Rift. Instead, Microsoft is trying to augment objects on top of your world. In many ways it sounds a lot like the secret Magic Leap project. Imagine using this with you Xbox.

Microsoft HoloLens is not just a crazy demonstration. Microsoft is actually planning on selling it to consumers and enterprise. It will be available “in the Windows 10 timeframe”.
