It is already possible to watch HBO series on Apple TV today with the HBO Go app, but you need a cable TV subscription. The new “HBO Now” stand-alone service will likely launch on Apple TV this April for $15 per month, according to sources.
HBO without cable TV
Cord cutters rejoice. Soon you will be able to watch HBO without a cable TV subscription. IBT and CNBC are both reporting that “HBO Now” - not an official name, yet - are in talks about making Apple TV a supported device for launch.
“HBO Now” will reportedly cost $15 dollars per month. HBO has already confirmed that it will launch a stand-alone service, but has not provided a launch date. Several reports have suggested that it will happen in April and the new reports reiterate this time frame.
The stand-alone HBO streaming service will compete with Netflix, which is currently expanding to become a global player. HBO launched “HBO Nordic” as a stand-alone service a few years ago with little success, partly because of very limited device support. The Nordic launch was reportedly viewed as a test launch for more ambitious plans.
HBO will reportedly use Game of Thrones season 5, which will debut on April 12, to drum up interest for the new service.
