Chromecast, the small TV dongle with no remote control, can now be controlled with your TV’s remote control. The latest update lets you pause and play videos by utilizing HDMI CEC.
Use a TV remote control
Chromecast has no actual user interface on the TV screen. Instead you push content from your phone or tablet onto the TV screen via the cast button, and you also need your phone to pause videos. Until now.
The latest software update (ver. 27946) adds the ability to pause videos with your standard TV remote control. This is possible because Chromecast supports HDMI CEC (you TV also needs to support it), which makes it able to communicate with a TV. The new feature has been confirmed to work with YouTube, Google Play Music, BBC iPlayer, web videos, HBO Go, WatchESPN, Plex, and Allcast.
Just press the pause or play button on your TV remote control.
It has also been confirmed to work with Sony and Samsung TVs, but every TV with HDMI CEC support should work. Be aware that not all HDMI inputs on TVs support CEC. Oftentimes, only one or two of the HDMI ports have it implemented. Just move your Chromecast to one of these. Chromecast can also turn on your TV via the CEC system.
