New Apple TV reportedly will not support 4K

06 Apr 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

A new, updated Apple TV is expected to finally arrive this summer. However, it will not support 4K video, a new report claims.

No 4K support in new Apple TV

The word comes from the same reporter, and probably the same sources, who said that a new Apple TV is coming this summer. Apple clearly feels that a major push for 4K is too early.

- “4K is great, but it’s still in its infancy,” a source familiar with Apple’s plans said to BuzzFeed.

Apple TV mock-up

Netflix and Amazon are currently streaming some movies and TV series in 4K, but there is still not much to watch in 4K. And there are no movies available in 4K from iTunes yet. Movie studios are currently preparing 4K versions of select movies to be released on UHD Blu-ray later this year, but do not expect a wide catalogue of titles.

The industry has divided the Ultra HD standard into two phases (1 and 2). Phase 1 is where we are now; TVs with 3840x2160 pixels but nothing else. Phase 2 will add better motion through HFR (high frame rate), better colors through WCG (wider color gamuts), and better contrast through HDR (high dynamic range). TV manufacturers will release the first TVs capable of utilizing the phase 2 elements later this year, but these TVs will be extremely expensive.

Apple might be right that 4K is in its infancy but it would be great if they would still include 4K to push the market forward. Maybe in the next, next Apple TV.
