LG confirms HDR update for its EG9600 OLED TV

In line with what we reported in January, LG has confirmed to Forbes that the 2015 EG9600 OLED TV will receive a firmware update to support HDR (high dynamic range) later this year.

HDR update for 2015 OLED TVs

FlatpanelsHD reported in January 2015 that LG was working on a firmware update for the new 2015 4K OLED TVs that would enable HDR (high dynamic range). We even shared our experiences with HDR on LG’s 4K OLED TVs and called it the “most impressive” we had seen. Other media reported that no such update was in the works.

LG’s Korean headquarter has now officially confirmed the HDR firmware update for EG9600/EG960V, which is the first 2015 4K OLED TV from LG. LG will launch more 4K OLED TVs later this year.

- “OLED TV technology is perfectly suited to display HDR content based on its ability to deliver perfect black levels and infinite contrast. Once technical specifications for HDR are finalised, LG plans to provide a firmware upgrade for the LG EG9600 series which will support HDR content. This network update will enable consumers to enjoy HDR content streamed through LG’s Smart TV partner apps or delivered via other devices through the TV’s IP interface,” LG wrote in a statement to Forbes.

HDR

The Forbes report notes that HDR will be supported for video streaming services such as Netflix. LG has yet to confirm whether the HDMI port will support HDR, too, which will require an update to HDMI 2.0a to be able to interpret the HDR metadata.

Back in January, LG told us that only the 2015 4K OLED TVs will receive the update; not the 2014 4K EC9700. LG also told us that the luminance output of the OLED panels will be increased with the firmware update because HDR requires higher luminance levels for peak brightness.

LG says that the update will be rolled out “once technical specifications for HDR are finalised”.
