YouTube starts streaming in 8K resolution

YouTube continues to improve picture quality. It is now possible to stream videos in incredible 8K resolution, even though no PC or TV displays are available on the market yet.

8K equals 7680x4320 pixels. It has sixteen times as many pixels as 1080p and four times as many as 4K that the industry is currently rolling out.

So far, we have only managed to find one video that is available in to stream in 8K. It is a short 2-minute clip of the ghost town Bodie on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in CAlifornia. Bodie grew into a large city during the gold rush but was abandoned almost overnight, making it feel like a time warp.


YouTube also refers to 8K as 4320p. It is the latest step in Google’s plan to make better picture quality available to the masses through HD/4K, VP9 decoding, and now 8K. The streaming service also recently added the ability to stream in 4K at 60 frames per second.

There are several videos on YouTube that have been shot in 8K or higher resolution but these besides the one mentioned, are only available to stream in 4K. Our office PCs have a hard time handling even 4K and 8K is simply unwatchable. You can try yourself. We have embedded the video below.
