Panasonic is launching its 2015 high-end TV in the US and Europe. CX850 (US) and CX800 (Europe) feature HDR (high dynamic range) support, a wider color gamut, and Firefox OS.
Panasonic launches 2015 high-end TV
Panasonic is moving beyond 4K pixels with its latest TV. HDR (high dynamic range) will make whites brighter and blacks deeper, and improve details. A wider color gamut (almost full DCI P3) will enable the TV to reproduce more of the colors that the human eye can perceive – at least if you have the content.
All the "smart" features are powered by Firefox OS. Panasonic has acknowledged that it needs help so the company has turned to Mozilla for its new TV operating system. Firefox OS offers access to Netflix, YouTube and other apps. It possible to stream in 4K quality from Netflix and YouTube since the TV supports HEVC and VP9 decoding.
Panasonic’s high-end TV is named CX850 in the US and CX800 in Europe. In Europe a curved CR850 variant will be added to the line-up later this year. Confusingly, there is also a CX800 US model but it is not at all identical to the European version and does not support HDR.
In Europe CX800 offers twin-tuner capabilities, allowing you to record one show while watching another. The “TV Anywhere” function lets you stream channels to a smartphone or tablet.
