Samsung has announced that it aims to develop a “super resolution” mobile display with 11K resolution, many times higher than today’s displays with 4K. The display can create an “optical illusion” to enable 3D effects.
With government backing
Samsung did not provide many technical details, only stating that the display will have an extreme pixel density of 2250 ppi (pixels per inch). An 11K display would equal something along the lines of a 5.9-inch display with 11520x6480 pixels.
Samsung is collaborating with 13 companies to have a prototype ready by the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics. The Korean government is backing the project with $26.5 million dollars over the span of 5 years.
Samsung is clearly pushing the limits of display technology but the company imagines that extreme resolution combined with other technologies can create an “optical illusion” that resembles real 3D. Samsung did specifically mention virtual reality but the display would likely be perfect for VR products such as Oculus Rift.
- ”Although some might think that 11K as ‘over specification’ that consumers do not need, this can work as a basis for Korean display industry to take another leap if related materials and parts improve through this,” said Chu Hye Yong, Executive Director of Samsung Display.
No details on the display technology were provided but it is likely an OLED display.
