Amazon Fling allows you to push content from a phone or tablet onto the TV screen via the Fire TV box or stick. It is Amazon’s competitor to Airplay and Google Cast.
Fling content to your Fire TV
Apple has Airplay, Google has Google Cast (used in Chromecast), and now Amazon has Fling. The system lets you “fling” video, music and photos from a mobile device onto the big screen wirelessly. It also offers “second screen” functionality, for example details on one of the actors in the movie you are watching.
Only a few apps support Fling at launch. One is Karaoke Party, which is pretty much self-explanatory. Another is Rivet Radio. Amazon has offered some elements of Fling for Kindle Fire users but the big change here is that it will now work with iOS and Android devices.
After you “fling” content to the TV screen you can use either your mobile device or the Fire TV remote for playback controls.
Amazon has released the API for developers of Android and iOS apps, letting them integrate support for Fling. Amazon says that it is very easy for developers who already support Google’s Chromecast to add support for Fling.
Amazon launched its Fire TV box in April 2014 and released a cheaper Fire TV Stick in October 2014.
