The new Apple TV is expected to be released next month, and according to a report by 9to5Mac it will run Apple’s next version of iOS with an App Store. It will also feature the new Proactive feature and system-wide search.
iOS9, Proactive & better search
A new report by Mark Gurman, who has accurate leaked much information about Apple products in the past, repeats some of the things that we have heard before; a slightly bigger box, a new touch-enabled remote, Siri integration, a faster processor, and more storage.
But it also adds new details about the box, codenamed J34. The next Apple TV will reportedly run a “full-blown iOS core” for the first time, more specifically an optimized variant of iOS9. This includes new features such as Proactive that will suggest apps and content based on your daily usage patterns. On an iPhone running iOS9, for example, it will give you the option to open the Netflix app at 8 pm from the lock-screen, if you usually start watching at that time.
The report also says that Apple is working on “accurate system-wide search”, allowing you to search for “James Bond” (by inputting text or with Siri) and get results from iTunes, Netflix, YouTube, and other apps. However, the report notes that Apple may wait to integrate this feature until more apps are available.
The user interface will be refreshed but not dramatically, according to the source. It could look like the mock-up above, but this has not been confirmed. Apple is also said to be testing the new iOS9 build on the current box, but it is unclear whether the old box will be updated.
The storage is expected to be 32GB and RAM is expected to be bumped up to 1GB or 2GB. The box will also be slimmer and slightly wider. There is not mention of 4K resolution support.
Apple’s annual event will reportedly be held on September 9th.
