Plex is now free for everyone using the Roku and Xbox 360 apps. Plex Pass is no longer required. The company also recently rolled out a new app for Samsung’s Tizen-based TVs, a new app for iOS, and an update for Android TV that added HEVC & Dolby Digital Plus support.
Plex is expanding
Plex, one of the most popular media player solutions, has released several updates in recent weeks. Yesterday, the company made the media player free to use on Roku devices and Xbox 360. Prior to this, Xbox 360 required Plex Pass and the app on Roku cost five dollars.
- ”We’ve been working hard for months on both apps, and they are finally feature-rich enough to qualify as full Plex apps, with support for our most advanced features: Plex Home, music videos & movie extras, secure connections on the Roku, Plex Mix, channels, fancy filtering and sorting, remote control, content discovery, and so much more. For those of you patiently waiting for the other big-screen apps to graduate from the preview period, this should give you a sense of the feature package we aim for,” wrote Plex.
Plex was also recently released on Samsung’s 2015 TVs running the Tizen operating system. Furthermore, Plex released its new iOS app earlier this month and made the app for Windows "universal" along with a new user interface.
Lastly, an update for Android TV brings native HEVC (H.265), mkv, and Dolby Digital Plus support to the Plex app. HEVC support makes it possible to stream 4K and HD video files encoded in the HEVC format over the home network.
