Philips had planned to launch its new TVs in spring but they were delayed several months. They are finally here. Philips has released its new 5, 6 and 7 series TVs with Ultra HD, Ambilight and Android TV.
Lots of Android TVs
Philips tells FlatpanelsHD that the 5 and 6 series TVs are now available in stores throughout Europe. The 7 series models are still rolling out but should be available at most retails locations and online shops.
Most of the new TVs come with Ultra HD resolution. All models from 6400 and up are based on Google’s “Android TV” that combines channels, apps, music, and games in a unified interface. The TVs also come equipped with Google Cast, allowing you to wirelessly push video, photos and music from a mobile device onto the TV. HEVC support makes it possible to stream Netflix in 4K resolution. There is no VP9 decoding, which is required for streaming YouTube in 4K, in the 5, 6 and 7 series TV. VP9 support will only be available in the new 8 and 9 series TVs.
When most buyers think of Philips they also think Ambilight. The lighting system is available from the 6 series and up. For 3D you will have to buy one of the 7 series TVs. The 7600 has a twin-tuner.

Tomorrow, Philips will announce the 8600 and 8700 series. Philips is also expected to launch its first HDR-enabled TV in the 9 series at IFA in Berlin.
