Soon you will be able to experience video from the International Space Station, timelapses and footage from historical missions in glorious 4K. NASA will launch a 4K channel on November 1st.
Space in 4K
Walking around on show floors, it is not uncommon to see shots of nature and space on the latest and greatest TVs. Space can be very impressive and 4K resolution will surely only make it more breathtaking.
On November 1st, NASA will launch a new channel dedicated to showing 4K footage of the “breathtaking beauty and grandeur of space”. It will include recent footage from the ISS, 4K timelapses, and re-mastered footage from historic missions.
The channel will first and foremost be distributed via the internet as a video stream. You will need a connection of “at least 13 Mbps” to enjoy the content in 4K at 60 frames per second, NASA and its partner Harmonic said. NASA is also sharing 4K videos on YouTube.
- “Partnering with Harmonic gives NASA an outlet for its UHD content, which has four times the resolution of HD and is the next iteration of digital television,” said Robert Jacobs, deputy associate administrator for NASA’s Office of Communications at the agency’s headquarters in Washington.
The channel will also debut on broadcast networks in the US. Today, SES announced that they will carry the channel over satellite in North America on November 1st, more specifically the AMC-18 satellite. No other deals and no details for bringing it to Europe have been announced.
