It has been over two years since Google launched the small Chromecast dongle. A new version with new design, improved WiFi, "Fast Play", "Chromecast Audio", and Spotify will launch later this month, according to 9to5mac.
New Chromecast coming this month
Chromecast has become a very popular as a way to watch streaming services and content on the big screen by utilizing the modern smartphone and tablet as a gateway device.
The first details on the new Chromecast have leaked. 9to5mac has gotten hold of internal documents that depict a new rounder design. If we are to believe the leaked slides the new Chromecast will no longer look like a USB dongle but instead utilize a round form factor, which could prove problematic if you want to connect other HDMI devices.
Google will reportedly improve WiFi, which is interpreted as support for the new “ac” WiFi standard. "ac" WiFi can theoretically reach 433 Mb/s and can transmit on several channels at once (MIMO). The standard also supports "beamforming", meaning that it can direct signal towards the router instead of transmitting signals in all directions. You need a router with “ac” WiFi, too.
A new feature named "Fast Play" will apparently reduce the time it takes to establish a connection to the streaming service once you press “cast”. Another new feature called "Chromecast Audio" will make it possible to connect Chromecast to speakers in your home through an analog audio cable. It will also support multi-room in "high quality".
Spotify will be one of the new content partners.
Google will reportedly unveil the new Chromecast on September 29.
