Android TV is Google's operating system for TVs. Sony and Philips were the first TV makers to ditch their own platforms in favor of Android TV, and soon TCL, Hisense and several unnamed manufacturers will make the switch.
2 Chinese & “several” unnamed companies
Sony and Philips launched its first Android-based TVs earlier this year. Sharp joined them shortly after, and Asus, Nvidia and Razer are also selling TV media player and game consoles built on Android TV.
- ”And today, we’re adding to your list of options by welcoming Hisense, TCL, and several other smart TV manufacturers to the Android TV family.“ said Google.
Google did not specify who the other TV manufacturers are but we know that Grundig is one of them. TCL and Hisense are selling TVs in the US and Europe. Hisense recently entered into a strategic partnership with Loewe, so it is not unlikely that Loewe will join the team, too.
Samsung, LG and Panasonic, on the other hand, appear to stand fast. The two Korean companies have developed Tizen and webOS, respectively, and Panasonic has teamed up with Mozilla for Firefox OS.
Google announced that Pace, Sagemcom and Technicolor will start making set-top boxes built on Android TV.
A range of new apps were also announced.
