A minor bug prevented Plex from launching its app on Friday but the team has used the weekend to correct this and it is now available in the App Store of the new Apple TV. Plex is calling it one of their most feature-rich apps to date.
Plex on tvOS
Plex has launched its first official app for Apple TV. The team behind the popular media streamer software says that “there truly isn’t any other platform we’ve wanted to be on for as long as we have the Apple TV”. This has not been possible before now with the launch of the open App Store on tvOS. Plex says that it took five weeks to develop the app.
The user interface is a mix of Plex’s usual design language and Apple’s design template that has been introduced with tvOS. Plex calls it “beautiful” and says that it is “one of the richest apps we’ve built feature-wise”. You can learn more about the development of the app in the source link.
With Plex you can watch your movies and TV series, enjoy vacation photos and listen to your music over the home network. As always, the app will automatically download covers and information on plot and actors from movie databases. Movie ratings from Rotten Tomato are also available. There is an option to watch trailers and you can mark movies as “watched”. However, some features are only available to paying "Plex Pass" subscribers.
From the home screen on Apple TV you will see content from the Plex app if you move the app to the top row.
Plex is available in the tvOS App Store now. It is free. To use it you also need to update to the latest version of Plex Media Server on the PC or NAS where your media files are stored.
There is no official Plex app planned for the old Apple TV box.
