Chromecast continued to lead the global media streamer market with 35% sales share (in units) in Q3 2015, according to Strategy Analytics. Apple TV is second. Amazon and Roku share the third place.
Chromecast leads pre-launch quarter
Who will control the living room? It is too early to tell but Google has been leading for the past five quarters with its ultra-cheap Chromecast. However, it is worth noting that every player (Google, Apple, Amazon & Roku) launched new media players in the beginning of Q4.
Google held 35% market share (in units sold) with its Chromecast in Q3 2015, where 9.2 million media streamers were sold globally. Apple held 20% share with its Apple TV box. Amazon and Roku held 16% each with its Fire TV and Roku boxes, respectively. No other player managed to break out of the “other” category. It is also worth noting that the “Android TV”-based boxes (Nvidia Shield, Nexus Player & Forge TV) are still not big sellers.

Smart TVs & game consoles
Smart TVs are not included in the first graph. If all connected TV devices are counted (TVs, Blu-ray players, media streamers & game consoles) sales reached 53 million units in Q3 and is on target to reach 221 million units for the full year. That would represent 17% growth.
Samsung dominates the Smart TV market and accounts for 1 in 4 Smart TVs in use, according to Strategy Analytics. Sony, Philips and Sharp are currently offering Google’s “Android TV” and has an estimated 8-10% share of the Smart TV market during Q3.
Sony dominates the game console market and shipped more than double the number of consoles as Microsoft in Q3. No numbers were announces. Strategy Analytics expects Microsoft to close the gap on PS4 in the Q4 Holiday quarter.
