Smithsonian Earth launched with nature shows in 4K

Back when HD was a new trend, several nature channels jumped at the opportunity to broadcast beautiful nature shows in HD. Smithsonian is now launching the first nature streaming service that offers 4K resolution with its new “Smithsonian Earth”.

At launch, the streaming service will only be available in 4K quality on the new Roku 4 player. On all other devices you can enjoy the nature shows in HD quality – at least for now.

- “Subscribers can watch a wide array of all new original programs, refreshed on a weekly basis, which includes documentaries and short series that explore everything from the sea life of Socorro Island, to the creatures of Madagascar and active volcanoes in Ethiopia.”


Shows include “Nomads of the Serengeti” and “Great Blue Wild”. The content will be separate from what is available on the Smithsonian Channel on cable networks, according to the company. Smithsonian Networks is a joint venture between Showtime and the Smithsonian Institution. 1% of the streaming revenue will be donated to the Smithsonian Institution for research and conservation.

Smithsonian Earth is available in the US for $3.99 per month with a free 7-day trial. The service is ad-free. It is also available on the new Apple TV (but obviously not in 4K) and “coming soon” to Amazon Fire TV. Learn more at smithsonianearthtv.com.
