Vimeo has started rolling out support for 4K streaming so you can enjoy video in excellent quality. The company is also switching to adaptive streaming across its network to ensure that you always get the best possible quality.

Vimeo started allowing creators to upload videos in 4K resolution last year and started giving users the option to download 4K videos last December. The company has now started rolling out 4K streaming support to all users.

- “We launched 4K upload support for PRO members last year, and now, as we start to see more widespread adoption of 4K-enabled screens in the market, we’re excited to roll out adaptive streaming across Vimeo,” said Andrew Pile, Vimeo CTO.

The company will gradually expand the feature to all users over the coming weeks. Initially, 4K is available only through the web player in browsers but it will later expand to TV platforms such as Roku (Roku 4), Amazon Fire TV, and Android TV.

There are lots of timelapse and artistic videos on Vimeo that should look amazing in 4K resolution.

The company has also started rolling out adaptive streaming, meaning that you will get the best possible picture quality from Vimeo that your internet connection can pull down and that your playback device supports. Adaptive streaming is available on iOS and Apple TV at launch, and will come to Amazon Fire TV, Roku, and Android in the coming weeks or months. For media players such as the new Apple TV this means up to 1080p quality whereas media players such as Roku 4 will do up to 4K.

4K will also be supported on Vimeo On Demand, the company’s premium VOD section that allows creates to sell or rent video productions. Vimeo’s video-making app Cameo started supporting 4K video last month.

4K and adaptive streaming should be available to all Vimeo users by early Q1 2016.
