Apple has released the first major update for Apple TV. tvOS 9.1 brings back support for the Remote app, allowing you to control the box from an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch. Siri now works with Apple Music.
tvOS 9.1 for Apple TV
Apple did not reset the clock when it released Apple TV so tvOS started on version 9. The company has now released the first major update with tvOS 9.1.
The update restores the Remote app functionality that greatly simplifies the process of inputting text on the TV screen. With the Remote app, you can use the virtual on-screen keyboard on iPhone or iPad when you want to log in or carry out search queries in apps. You can even control Apple TV via the Apple Watch by swiping up/down/left/right.
To use the Remote app you also need to update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 9.2.
Additionally, tvOS 9.1 brings Siri support to the Apple Music app, allowing you to ask for specific artists, albums, genres and more. Siri on Apple TV works only in a few regions for now.
Lastly, the update includes the usual bug fixes and optimizations, reportedly enhancements to networking and scrolling.
If your Apple TV has not automatically downloaded the update you can do it manually by going to Settings -> System -> Software Updates.
