Apple reportedly puts internet TV service plans "on hold"

09 Dec 2015 | Rasmus Larsen |

Apple has been working on bringing an internet TV service to the Apple TV, which would allow you to pick TV channels á la carte. Those plans are now on hold, according to Bloomberg and CBS’s CEO.

Plans on hold for now

Apple has “suspended” its plans to offer an internet TV service and is instead focusing on being a platform for other media companies that want to sell content through apps. Just like it has been doing with iPhone.

The report from Bloomberg is mirrored by CBS Corp.’s CEO who spoke at a conference yesterday.

- "They've had conversations on it and I think they pressed the hold button," said Les Moonves, CBS Corp. CEO.

Why? Media executives have reportedly been reluctant to agree to Apple’s terms. The company wanted to offer smaller bundles or even á la carte that allowed the viewer to pick only the channels he wanted to watch.

However, Moonves stressed that Apple could still decide to go ahead with its plans at a later point in time. If not apple, someone else will make it happen.

- "This will happen. People will not be spending money on channels they don't want to watch."

The new Apple TV already offers access to major TV services such as Netflix, HBO Now and Showtime as well as sports programming through separate apps.
