LG has solved challenges related to production of mid-size OLED panels for PC monitors and laptops and aims to enter the market in 2016 or 2017, according to Korean newspaper ETNews and analysts.
OLED monitors in a few years
Every PC monitor on the market today uses LCD display technology. While LCD technology has been improved a lot over the last decade, OLED could take picture quality to new heights, improve response time, and allow manufacturers to experiment with new form factors.
LG Display - LG’s display division - intends to showcase the first OLED monitor panel prototype at CES 2016 this January, claims ETNews. The Korean newspaper ads that “LG Display is putting all of its capabilities into developing OLED panels for monitors”. However, the company might decide to exhibit the prototype behind closed doors.
LG has not confirmed ETNews’ information.
- “We are currently supplying OLED mostly for TVs. Although we are planning to hold a closed booth at CES targeting our customers, we have not yet confirmed on detailed items that we are planning to display,” an LG Display representative said.
LG Display has reportedly reduced burn-in issues to a level low enough to use OLED displays in monitors and laptops that usually run desktop operating systems. Windows for example has several static elements, including the start logo in the bottom left corner.
LG Display’s OLED displays are already used in LG and Panasonic’s OLED TVs as well as watches such as Apple Watch. LG exhibited the first 15” and 31” OLED panels in 2009 and 2010.
ETNews did not specify a time frame, but analysts believe that LG will enter the market in either 2016 or 2017, initially only for high-end monitors and later laptops.
