Sony launched its 2015 TVs based on the Android TV operating system this summer. Back then, the company promised to enable USB HDD recording and PIP/PAP for Europeans through a later software update. This is the second time that Sony delays the update. It is now expected to be available in February/March.

Recording & PIP delayed again
Sony had initially promised to enable USB HDD recording in the fall. They later extended their own deadline to late December. The company is now postponing it to February or March 2016, depending on your region.

- "We aim to implement USB HDD Recording and PIP/PAP functionalities before 31st March 2016"  the company wrote in a blog post on its support website.

This date applies to TV sets bought in the UK. In other regions, including Ireland and the Nordics, Sony has promised to release the update “before 29th February 2016”.


It is not clear what the technical challenge is. Philips is already offering USB recording on its 2015 TVs that run Android TV. However, Philips’ TVs were delayed by almost six months.

Instead Sony has released a minor update to fix various bugs. This update should be available as an over-the-air update now.

It fixes:
Responsiveness of the IR remote control
Occasional black screen while powering on the TV
Occasional black screen with sound when switching off the TV
TV rebooting during channel changing

Sony has not announced a release date for 6.0 Marshmallow either.
