Dell reveals 30-inch 4K OLED monitor

08 Jan 2016 | Rasmus Larsen |

Dell has unveiled the first OLED monitor, outside of studio monitors. The 30-inch UP3017Q - or “Ultrasharp 30 OLED” - even has 4K resolution. But it will cost you.

Movie studios have used OLED monitors for some years now but this is the first OLED monitor that consumers can get their hands on. At least if you are willing to cough up $5000 dollars

The monitor boasts 4K resolution (3840x2160 pixels), 0.1 ms response time, 100% AdobeRGB coverage, 97.8% DCI-P3 coverage, 10-bit, and extremely high contrast (400,000:1). This is possible because OLED has more or less perfect native black reproduction. Luminance can be controlled on a pixel level. Compare this to the typical 1000:1 contrast ratio of IPS-based LCD monitors.

From a design point of view the OLED monitor looks like any other Dell monitor with a standard black/grey design and a slim bezel. OLED panels can potentially allow manufacturers to experiment with entirely new design concepts. That has clearly not been Dell’s main focus. However, the display panel should take picture quality to a new level and that it exciting.

It also offers a USB-C port. Besides that there are no other details regarding connection ports.

The UltraSharp 30 OLED will ship by the end of March for $5000 dollars and is clearly targeted at professionals.
