Samsung shows off gigantic 170" TV built from modules

09 Jan 2016 | Rasmus Larsen |

Samsung is not trying to hide the fact that its gigantic “170-inch SUHD TV” at CES 2016 is made up of smaller LCD display modules. In fact, that is the whole point. The seams are so thin that you can't see them.

Built from display modules

There are two ways to get larger TVs into the living room. One is to make the TV flexible in some kind of way. The other is to built it from smaller modules. It simply is not feasible to deliver a rigid 170” TV in a box to a home address.

So, Samsung has chosen to built one from modules. This is certainly not the first time we have seen a large screen built from modules but the one that Samsung has brought to Las Vegas is much more impressive than anything we have seen in the past, simply because the seams are so thin that you literally cannot see them from a few meters aways.

Of course, if you move really close to the TV you will see the seams but a 170” TV is not meant to being watched from that close. This is the first modular TV that we would actually consider for the living room.

Samsung did not want to go into specifics but it is surely an LCD display. We do not know how high the resolution is but it is probably higher than 4K.

Too bad that Samsung isn’t selling it… At least we now know that it is possible.
