Google currently has the cheap Cardboard VR headset but it has repeatedly said that it has bigger plans for virtual reality. Those plans include a new VR headset with better lenses & sensors, made from a plastic casing, according to Financial Time.
Better lenses & sensors
Google’s first entry into the field of virtual reality came with the 2014 release of its super-cheap Cardboard headset that has often been given away for free.
Google and its partners have now shipped more than 5 million Cardboards, helping the search giant to quickly scale up VR together with integration into YouTube and other initiatives such as a 360-degree camera solution.
However, with Cardboard Google is just testing the waters, according to Financial Times. Behind the scenes the company is working on a more full-fledged VR headset for phones to take on Oculus’ and Samsung’s Gear VR.
The new headset will reportedly be made from a solid plastic casing. It will include better lenses for improved picture quality and a wider field of view and for the first time sensors to register physical movement.
Currently, Cardboard works with both Android and iOS. It is not clear if the new version will work with both operating systems.
The new headset is expected to be released later this year.
