3D TVs never became the success that industry players had hoped for. This year, the world’s largest TV manufacturer will move on. None of Samsung's 2016 TVs will support 3D.
No TVs with 3D in 2016
Once again, 3D has failed. Throughout history, the industry has tried to revive 3D on several occasions but consumers have never truly embraced it. In hindsight, the very idea of reproducing 3D on a flat screen or canvas several meters away seems silly.
Modern 3D was introduced on consumer TVs in 2008/2009 but it never resonated with mainstream consumers. Samsung has now acknowledged that 3D is a dead end and has decided to officially kill 3D. None of the 2016 TVs will feature the technology. Not even the most expensive TVs that will sell for several thousands dollars will have 3D, Samsung confirmed to FlatpanelsHD at Samsung Forum 2016.
But of course most of us had seen it coming. 3D has been on decline for years. When the industry moved on to 4K resolution it did not even bother to develop a 4K 3D standard, so 3D in the living room has been stuck on HD resolution.
As for the other TV manufacturers some of them will continue to support 3D in its 2016 TVs but only on the most expensive models.
Samsung will instead focus on virtual reality products such as its Gear VR headset. Virtual reality can reproduce much more believable and realistic depth in images.
