The new version of Raspberry Pi, which has become popular as a video streaming solution, is significantly faster and features WiFi and Bluetooth. It still costs just $35.
Raspberry Pi 3 is here
The first Raspberry Pi was announced four years ago. Since then more than eight million units have been sold. The group behind it has now introduced a third version that is more capable.
According to the Raspberry Pi Foundation the new Raspberry Pi 3 is 10x faster than the original version and 50-60 percent faster than the Raspberry Pi 2. It has a 64-bit quad-core 1.2GHz ARM processor and 1GB RAM, compared to a 32-bit 900MHz and 1GB RAM in the predecessor.
The new, faster hardware makes it a great DIY solution for people looking for a video streaming solution. We recently built a capable Kodi video player based on Raspberry Pi 2. Built-in WiFi (n standard) and Bluetooth (4.1) will enable new use cases and potentially make it easier to control the Raspberry hardware through Bluetooth remotes or apps. It will also allow the Pi 3 to connect to other Bluetooth devices or sensors in the home.
